# Build your first agent

> From a short description to an agent you can test, in a few minutes.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Start a new agent">
    Go to **Agents** and click **New agent**, or click **Create agent** on your Studio home. Choose:

    * **Start from scratch** to describe the agent yourself, or
    * **Use a template** to start from a ready-made agent and adjust it.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Describe what you need">
    In **Build an agent**, give it an **Agent name** (for example *Sales Assistant*) and describe in plain words what it should do. Click **Generate**.

    Studio drafts the agent for you. Under **Review before creating**, read and adjust:

    * **Goal**: the outcome the agent should drive.
    * **Description**: what it's for, so your team knows when to use it.
    * **Instructions**: what it does every time it runs.

    Click **Create agent**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Configure it on the Build tab">
    Your agent opens on **Build**:

    | Section | What you set |
    | - | - |
    | **Goal** | What outcome should this agent drive? |
    | **Role** | What persona and identity should this agent adopt? |
    | **Instructions** | What should this agent do every time it runs? Type **@** to point to a document or a tool. |
    | **Type** and **Model** | The kind of agent and the AI model it uses. |
    | **Tools** | Services and actions it can use. See [Tools and integrations](/jen-studio/tools-and-integrations). |
    | **Skills** | Reusable know-how you can add to several agents. |
    | **Output format** | Text, structured JSON, an image or a file. |
    | **Triggers** | When it runs. See [Triggers](/jen-studio/triggers). |
  </Step>

  <Step title="Give it knowledge">
    Upload the documents it should answer from to [Drive](/jen-studio/drive), then select them in the agent's **Persona** → **Knowledge base**.

    <Tip>
      Give each agent only the documents it needs. A focused agent gives sharper answers.
    </Tip>
  </Step>

  <Step title="Try it in the Playground">
    Open **Playground** and chat with your agent. Mark answers **Good answer** or **Bad answer**, and use **Teach the agent** to correct it. See [Test and improve](/jen-studio/playground).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Deploy it">
    Open **Deploy**, check **Readiness**, then **Enable agent**. Choose a channel: **Web Chat**, a **Share link**, an **Embed code** for your website or a **QR code**. See [Deploy](/jen-studio/deploy).
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Writing good instructions

* **Say who it serves and what it must not do.** "You help our customers track parcels. Never promise a delivery date the tracking tool didn't return."
* **Point to its sources.** Type **@** in Instructions to name the document or tool to use for each task.
* **Keep one job per agent.** Two narrow agents beat one that does everything.
